13.4 Working with Student Progression Data

How to use student and class data in Studio for personalised planning.

Studio mode lets you add student progression data to your sessions, so you can create personalised resources, group learners effectively, and plan interventions based on real information about where students are in their learning.

What is Student Progression Data

Progression data shows where each student is in their learning journey:

  • Learning progression levels: Where students sit on continuums of learning
  • Assessment results: Performance on recent tasks or tests
  • Strengths and gaps: What students can do well and what they're still developing
  • Progress over time: How students are tracking compared to earlier in the year
  • Curriculum alignment: Which outcomes students have achieved or are working toward

This data comes from student interactions with CurricuLLM, assessments you've entered, and work they've completed.

Why Add Student Data to Studio

When you include progression data:

  • Create targeted resources: Materials that match students' actual levels, not guesses
  • Group students effectively: Use data to form ability groups, mixed groups, or intervention groups
  • Plan interventions: Identify students who need support and create specific help
  • Personalize content: Generate resources for individual students or small groups
  • Track class patterns: See common strengths or gaps across the whole class
  • Make evidence-based decisions: Use real data instead of assumptions

How to Add Student Data

Adding a whole class:

  • Open Studio mode and start a session.
  • Click "Students and Classes".
  • Choose the class you wish to use.
  • You can now ask questions about the class or create resources based on their levels.

Adding individual students:

  • Click "Students and Classes".
  • Search for or select specific students from your classes.
  • Useful for targeted intervention planning or personalised work.

Using Student Data for Grouping

One of Studio's most powerful uses is creating effective groups based on progression data.

Example: Grouping by capability

  • Add your Year 7 English class to Studio
  • Add relevant curriculum
  • Ask: "Show me how to group my class into three reading levels based on their progression data"

Studio will:

  • Analyze the progression data for reading
  • Suggest three groups (e.g., developing, consolidating, extending)
  • List which students belong in each group
  • Explain the criteria used for grouping

Example: Creating mixed ability groups

Ask: "Create four mixed-ability groups for a collaborative project, ensuring each group has a range of skill levels"

Studio balances the groups so each has students at different progression levels.

Example: Identifying extension students

Add Year 9 Maths class and algebra outcomes Ask: "Which students are ready for extension work on quadratic equations?"

Studio identifies students whose progression data shows they've mastered prerequisites.

Planning Interventions with Student Data

Identifying students who need support:

  • Add class data and relevant outcomes
  • Ask: "Which students are struggling with persuasive writing? Show me their specific gaps"

Studio lists:

  • Students below expected progression
  • Their particular areas of difficulty
  • Suggested focus areas for intervention

Creating intervention plans:

After identifying students, ask:

  • "Create a small group intervention plan for these students focusing on their specific gaps"
  • "Generate three targeted activities to address the persuasive writing issues these students have"
  • "Design a catch-up program for students who missed the fractions unit"

Example: Targeted support resources

  • Add individual students who need support
  • Add curriculum outcomes they're working toward
  • Upload a worksheet or resource template
  • Click Document to generate a worksheet, target these students in the free-text field

Result: A version, each tailored to the student's progression level and gaps.

Everyday Example

Using student progression data in Studio is like having a detailed map before planning a journey. Instead of assuming everyone starts at the same point, you can see exactly where each student is on their learning path. This lets you plan the right next steps—some students might need a different route, others might be ready to move ahead faster, and some might need extra support on challenging terrain. Studio uses this information to help you create resources and activities that meet students where they actually are, making your teaching more targeted and effective.
